Reflexology
is as old as history itself. We know this treatment was practised
in India and China more than 2,000 years ago. It is an alternative therapy
based on the belief that every organ, gland and bone system has terminating
points in the feet that can be stimulated to improve the functioning of
that system. The theory is nothing new (illustrations and artefacts suggest
that foot therapy was practised by Chinese, Japanese and Egyptians as
far back as 5,000 years ago) but its popularity is.
 The
name reflexology has nothing to do with reflexes, but rather with the
theory that the feet reflect the body. A Reflexologist sees
your feet as a mirror of your whole body (see left); the right foot governing
the right-hand side of the body and the left foot the left-hand side.
When you bring both feet together, you have a complete outline of the
human body, with the big toe representing the head and the lateral sides
of the feet reflecting the outside of the body, such as the shoulders
and hips. The principle is that congestion or tension in any part of the
foot mirrors congestion or tension in the related part of the body. A
trained Reflexologist, using their hands to apply gentle pressure to the
feet, can restore the freeflow of energy to the whole body.
